Cast Versus Forged: What the Tester Actually Shows
Golfers argue about cast versus forged irons more than almost any other topic in the equipment world, usually based on feel alone. A hardness tester turns part of that argument into a measurement instead of an opinion.
Casting pours molten steel into a mold and lets it solidify in the final shape. Forging strikes a heated billet between dies, compressing and reshaping the existing grain structure of the metal rather than letting it solidify from liquid. Both processes can produce a perfectly good clubhead, and both get heat-treated afterward — but the grain structure each one starts with behaves differently once you put it under a hardness tester.
Grain Structure Behaves Differently Under Load
A forged head's grain structure is compressed and aligned by the forging process itself, which tends to produce a more uniform response to heat treatment across the head — test five points on a well-forged head and you'll usually see readings within a fraction of a point of each other. A cast head's grain structure, set by how the metal solidified in the mold, can vary more by location, particularly near thicker sections that cooled more slowly during casting.
What This Means for a Hardness Certificate
When we test a cast head, we generally take more sample points across the face and sole than we would on a comparable forged head, specifically because a single reading is less likely to represent the whole head evenly. This isn't a knock on casting as a process — plenty of excellent, forgiving cast irons are on the market — it's just a difference in what the tester needs to check to give an honest picture.
The debate over which feels better is subjective. The consistency of the grain structure under a tester is not.
Neither Process Guarantees Consistency by Itself
A poorly controlled forging run can still produce inconsistent hardness, and a well-controlled casting run can produce heads that test remarkably even. The manufacturing method is one input among several; the actual hardness reading on the head in front of you is the only thing that tells you what you're really holding, regardless of which process built it.
